Maybe that’s why so many first daughters become overly independent.

Despite everything, I wouldn’t trade my siblings for the world.

Watching them grow has been one of life’s greatest gifts.

Loving them has taught me patience.

Protecting them has taught me courage.

Being their first friend has been an honor.

I just wish, every once in a while, I got to experience what it feels like to be someone’s little sister.

To be guided instead of always guiding.

To be protected instead of always protecting.

To hear someone say, “I’ve got you.”

Maybe that’s why many first daughters find comfort in mentors, older friends, aunties, and women who choose to love us like sisters.

Maybe life knows we still need someone to hold our hands too.

So, if you’re a first daughter reading this…

I hope you know you’re allowed to be tired.

You’re allowed to ask for help.

You’re allowed to not have all the answers.

You don’t have to carry every burden simply because you carried the first one.

And if no one has told you this lately…

You don’t always have to be the strong one.

Today is Mother’s Day.

And all over the internet, people are celebrating mothers, posting beautiful pictures, writing sweet captions, and thanking the women who carried them, raised them, prayed for them, and stood by them.

As they should.

But today, I also want to speak to another kind of woman.

A woman people do not always think of when they say “Happy Mother’s Day.”

A woman whose motherhood started long before pregnancy.

Long before marriage.

Long before anyone even thought to call her “Mummy.”

I want to speak to the first daughters.

The first daughters who were still children when life handed them responsibilities bigger than their age.

The first daughters who learned how to carry people before they learned how to carry themselves.

The first daughters who became the second mother in the house without induction ceremony, without salary, without rest, and without anyone asking if they were ready.

This is for the first daughters who know what it means to grow up too quickly.

The ones who helped raise younger ones.

Who changed diapers.

Who cooked meals.

Who braided hair.

Who helped with homework.

Who carried crying babies on their backs.

Who ran errands.

Who stood in as the “little mummy” when their mother was tired, unavailable, overwhelmed, or simply needed help surviving.

This is for the first daughters who were praised for being “strong” but were never asked if they were tired.

The ones who were told, “You are the first child, you should know better.”

The ones who were told, “Set an example.”

The ones who were expected to be mature, responsible, wise, patient, and selfless, even when they were still soft, still young, still figuring life out themselves.

The ones who were not allowed to break down because too many people were leaning on them.

The truth is, many first daughters have mothered people in ways nobody claps for.

You mother with your presence.

With your sacrifice.

With your silence.

With your watchfulness.

With that instinct that makes you notice when someone is hungry, sad, angry, or pretending to be okay.

You mother with the way you remember what everybody needs.

How many times you had to put your own needs second.

How many times you had to grow up overnight.

Some first daughters do not even know when it started.

They just woke up one day and realized they were no longer being treated like a child.

They were being treated like backup mother.

Assistant parent.

Household manager.

Emotional support system.

Built-in fixer.

And because you are capable, people keep giving you more.

Because you handle things well, people assume it is easy for you.

Because you rarely complain, people think you are not hurting.

But strength does not mean something is not heavy.

It only means you found a way to carry it.

The ones who gave so much of themselves growing up, and now give even more to the children they carried themselves.

The ones who have spent years taking care of everybody else, and now pour from hearts that have already known labor, long-suffering, and love.

The ones who did not just become mothers when they gave birth.

They have been preparing for motherhood their whole lives.

Some of you entered motherhood already tired.

Already stretched.

Already used to being needed.

Already familiar with self-denial.

And sometimes that makes your journey look beautiful on the outside, but deeply exhausting on the inside.

Because people assume, “She can handle it. She has always been nurturing.”

But just because you know how to care for others does not mean you do not need care too.

Just because you are good at showing up does not mean you do not deserve to be poured into.

Just because motherhood looks natural on you does not mean it is not demanding.

To every first daughter reading this, I need you to hear me with all your heart:

God sees you.

He sees the child you were.

He sees the young girl who carried too much.

He sees the teenager who had to become wise too early.

He sees the woman who became dependable because she had no other choice.

He sees every hidden sacrifice.

Every swallowed tear.

Every private prayer.

First daughters, I know something else too.

Sometimes your strength becomes your prison.

Sometimes being “the responsible one” means people forget to protect you.

Sometimes being “the mature one” means people stop comforting you.

Sometimes being “the strong one” means people only come to collect, and rarely come to give.

And because of that, many first daughters do not know how to receive.
